Hunting for a new, durable, and up-to-date laptop that is a price-performance monster? Here are the best laptops under 1,000 CAD for you!
A thousand dollars is always the optimal price for a new laptop regardless of time. Back in the 1990s, when my father brought a computer to our home, it worked much better than others of that era. It was, of course, paltry if you compare it to the laptops of our day. Yet, my dad paid 1,000 dollars for that laptop. It had 32 megabytes of RAM, 128 GB of HDD capacity. The price of a computer that is suitable for an average computer user never changed ever since.
So, that is why we are listing the laptops that are worth 1,000 CAD or below. There are overachieving laptops on our list, as well as low-budget gaming systems. If you are about to buy a new laptop, you might like our quick guide to buying a new notebook too.
Before the guide, we would like to introduce you to our list first. As of 2020, we claim you cannot find a better one than these!
The Best Laptops Under $1,000 in Canada
- HP Laptop 2020 17.3” (Our Top Pick)
- ASUS 15.6” TUF Gaming Laptop
- Asus Laptop X540BA-RB94
- HP Chromebook 14” x360
- Lenovo Chromebook C330
- Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad S145
- Acer Aspire 5 Slim
- Dell Inspiron 2020 i5 1035G4
1. HP Laptop 2020 17.3”
This one is a no-brainer when you compare it with the rest of the laptops available in the Canadian market. HP’s 2020 model, with its 17.3-inch display size, is the best laptop under 1,000 dollars hands down.
It has 16 GB RAM. This is the best one on our list. Moreover, it employs a DDR4 RAM, which is good for energy consumption. Even though modern laptops have a lot better RAM capacities nowadays, that would bump up the price over a thousand. 16 GB is good for many daily tasks and even some AAA games.
Nowadays, laptops do not come with very high storage capacities due to the rise of external hard disks, cloud storage services. Similarly, HP Laptop does not have a massive capacity with its 256 GB SSD. Yet, among our list, there is only one laptop that tops this one, and that is the Asus Gaming laptop with its enormous 1 TB capacity.
HP Laptop is again capping the top spot in this one with its almost professional processor. It has a 3.90 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and that is an absolute beast. It makes this laptop work smoothly without burning your thighs.
Physical Features and Others
It is the largest screen on our list, as we mentioned earlier. Moreover, it does not have the disadvantage that many wide-screen laptops have. It is very lightweight compared to its size. It weighs only 5.5 pounds (2.5 kilograms), and this makes it easier to take it to work or so.
In addition to that, the battery is not the best here. Even the first battery lasted just a bit less than 5 hours, and I would have liked it to drain slower.
To sum things up, this is simply the best laptop under 1,000 dollars if you do not mind the relatively low battery life. It will work perfectly for more than 3 or 4 years until it gets outdated.
- Great processor
- Pretty good DDR4 RAM
- Extremely wide screen
- Somehow low battery life
2. ASUS 15.6” TUF Gaming Laptop
If you are looking for a low-budget gaming laptop, Asus’ Gaming Laptop is here to do the service. Even though we cannot guarantee that it will last long, you will at least start to play the best-seller games without having to compromise graphics and overall performance.
RAM-wise, Asus does not give the best performance as it can, unfortunately. I would expect a higher RAM from a “gaming” laptop. If it were at least 16 GB like our top choice HP, it would be much better than the current 8 GB.
Asus Gaming Laptop leads the way here. It has gargantuan 1 TB storage capacity with an option to upgrade later. If you are going to use it as a gaming laptop, 1 TB at first should suffice. The closest laptop on our list in this section has only about 256 GB SSD, which is 75 percent lower than this.
The Asus TUF Gaming Laptop employs the 2.3 GHz 8th Generation Intel Core i5 that you can upgrade it up to 3.9 GHz. It is quite good compared to the rest of our list. Only two of them beat this one, which is the other Asus on the third spot and HP Laptop.
Physical Features and Others
Most of the time, we see that gaming laptops are a bit heavy, but the Asus Gaming Laptop is not one of them. It weighs only 5.6 lbs (2.3 kilograms), and its display size is the second largest along with Lenovo IdeaPad, Acer Aspire 5 Slim, and Asus X540BA-RB94.
Its graphics card is essential as this is a gaming laptop, and it is 2 GB, which quite enough.
The Asus TUF Gaming Laptop is one of the few good gaming laptops that you can buy when you are on a budget. Its processor is good with a good graphics card. You may want to think about upgrading its RAM.
- 2 GB video card
- Storage space
- Needs a better RAM
3. Asus Laptop X540BA-RB94
The next one is yet another Asus, but this time, we have a regular computer, not a gaming laptop. If you use your laptop to work on your projects and do daily tasks, the 15.6” Asus Laptop X540BA-RB94 is a good choice. Its screen is not as wide as the previous HP, but it does not lack critical things that a laptop must-have.
This laptop has an 8 GB DRAM, which performs better than most of the other 8 GB RAMs. As this one is not a specific design for gamers or video editors, this RAM is quite enough for most of the users. Furthermore, it will be ample for a long time.
Just like the gaming Asus, this one also has 1 TB, which gives its users a lot of space to fill. Even though I believe 256 GB for a casual internet-surfer is more than enough, big numbers are good, right?
This laptop has the second-best processor on our list, right after the HP Laptop. It easily beats all the Chromebooks on our list as well as the IdeaPad, Inspiron, or Aspire. The AMD A9-9425 processor with Radeon R5 integrated graphics is an excellent part to complement the system.
Despite its 15.6-inch display, it weighs less than 5 pounds, which lets you carry the laptop here and there. The touchpad could be more expansive and in a more central position as a side note.
All in all, Asus produces this great model at a very affordable price. It has some design issues for me, though.
- Great HDD
- Quite well processor
- The touchpad is not ergonomic
4. HP Chromebook 14” x360
When it comes to Chromebooks, I believe it is fairer to compare them with one another, and this is simply the best Chromebook in the market. Sure, it is not as multipurpose as the regular laptops; however, they do whatever they promise to do. That purpose is to give comfort to its users.
So, HP’s Chromebook x360 is a convertible laptop type just like the other Chromebook on our list, Lenovo C330. That means you can just fold it 360 degrees and use it as if it is a giant tablet. I stress huge as it has an enormous display size for this type of laptop. The screen is 14 inches, and it feels like you are using a regular laptop. You do not need to zoom in at all.
Its RAM is more than adequate for a Chromebook as it has 8 gigabytes. As a comparison, the Lenovo C330 has only 4 GB. There are only two laptops on our list that have more than 8 GB, and that is HP’s flagship laptop and Dell Inspiron 2020. All the others have either 8 or 4 GB RAMs in their system.
Apart from these, HP’s Chromebook works on 64 GB eMMC, just like Lenovo C330. If what you expect from a laptop is to check the social media, read the news, and use simple programs like word processors, this is enough. However, if you ask for more, eMMC should not be your choice.
Battery Life and Others
One good thing about it is its durability. As the system is not so advance, you might think that you will only be able to use it for a couple of years, and it is going to be outdated. Alas, it will not be. You will use it for these purposes for many years to come. The Chrome OS allows you to update the operating system regularly, and your computer will not be struggling any time soon.
Lastly, we had the chance to test its real battery life. It performs less than its counterpart, the C330 model. It fully drained the battery just shy of 9 hours. If you play some android games, it will take about 5 to 6 hours to go from full battery to no battery. It is still a lot better than the other laptops on the list.
To sum up, HP Chromebook is a single-purpose laptop that works and will work quite well. Its screen is quite large; it beats some of the other regular laptops in RAM capacity. However, the storage is not a specialty in a Chromebook.
- High durability
- Extra-large screen
- Quite long battery-life
- Storage capacity
5. Lenovo Chromebook C330
Chromebooks were once a trendy choice among laptop users; however, its popularity was just a flash in the pan. Yet, it has recently made its comeback, and Lenovo made a great Chromebook, and it makes our best laptops list.
As a Chromebook is good for a casual laptop user, the RAM is far from being very powerful but somewhere in the middle. The better Chromebook option on our list is the HP’s, and this one has 4 GB LPDD RAM. As a comparison, HP has 8 GB SDRAM. Indeed, it is enough for surfing the internet, using the word processors, and casually watching movies and videos on YouTube. Yet, having multiple windows at once might slow your laptop down.
Secondly, just like all the other Chromebooks, it has a minimal storage space. This one works on eMMC, which is a memory card, and its storage is 64 gigabytes. If you are going to download too many programs and want to work through this laptop, you may want to look for a different option. The storage is quite paltry here, and there is no way to upgrade it.
However, what makes the Lenovo C330 particular is its never-ending battery life. In our tests, we just left Google Chrome open for a while to see how long it takes. This is simply because the brands tend to exaggerate such features in their advertisements. So, the C330 says 10 hours, and for us, it took 10 hours 23 minutes to fully drain the battery. This is much better than the other laptops in this sense, even beating the other Chromebook option, the HP Chromebook.
Lastly, let’s delve deeper into its physical features. It is undoubtedly as light as a feather, weighing only 2.64 pounds (1.2 kilograms), and it has quite a small display size, sitting at only 11.6 inches. It is much lighter than the other laptops on our list, but it has one of the smallest display sizes here.
The Lenovo C330 model is an outstanding laptop for those who want a comfortable use of the internet. It is not a huge burden to carry it around while the charging cables will be staying at home. Even though its RAM capacity is lower than desired, it is still a decent choice.
- Long-lasting battery
- Low RAM and HDD
6. Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad S145
Lenovo’s IdeaPad has several different laptops; yet, this is one of the best performers for those who are on a lower budget. It has 15.6 inches display size that is large enough. The graphic card is Intel UHD 610 with shared graphic memory. When you compare it with the other ones that rank higher, it is not as good as the Dell Inspiron or HP Laptop.
Other than that, its RAM capacity is quite meager, which is 4 GB DDR4 RAM. If you want to invest in more, you can always upgrade it with an 8 GB one, though. The low RAM capacity will affect the laptop performance badly. Yet, this is not a design for gamers or for those who want multiple functions at the same time.
The Intel Celeron Processor that Lenovo engineers employed here are suitable for people who need to work on CPU-intensive tasks. Indeed, it is not the best in this sense; Asus Gaming Laptop on our list, for example, singlehandedly beats this processor. However, as I mentioned before, the main idea of this laptop is to do things better than the Chromebooks on our list.
In addition to that, the storage here is on par with the main purpose of the laptop, and it comes with 128 GB SSD by default. Although upgrading is possible, 128 GB will be enough for many users. For example, Lenovo IdeaPad is in the same class as Dell Inspiron, and that one has 256 GB SSD while the Acer Aspire has the same level.
One thing that we can take for granted is good customer service and durability. I have used many different Lenovos in my life, and I have never thrown them away. The first Lenovo I bought still works generally for surfing the internet or watching the video. Nowadays, it is hard to find a laptop that works just like the first day, and Lenovo always produces such laptops.
It is one of the good laptops in the market even though it is not the best. It has low RAM capacity, average storage capacity, and average processor. However, it will stay sharp and working longer than others.
- Long durability
- Acceptable graphic card
- Low RAM for this price range.
7. Acer Aspire 5 Slim
Here is something we really liked and now recommend; the Acer Aspire 5 Slim. As we mentioned before, Acer Aspire is in the same class as Dell Inspiron and Lenovo IdeaPad. Even though it ranks lower than the Lenovo IdeaPad, the price-performance ratio is much higher than its competitors.
Acer Aspire 5 Slim has an 8 GB SD RAM. Even though Lenovo’s 4 GB DDR4 RAM sounds quite low, it works almost the same levels as this one. Yet, the numbers matter here, and Dell Inspiron and HP Laptop are much better than this.
The storage capacity of the Acer Aspire 5 Slim is 128 GB SSD. Within its counterparts, it is quite the standard as the HDD is never enough for such laptops nowadays. That is why we highly recommend an external hard disk for better storage. However, 128 GB may be enough as a starter.
Acer Aspire has one of the good processors on our list and the best among the Acer Aspire, Lenovo Ideapad, and Dell Inspiron trio. It would be much better to have a better processor if you want to play triple-A games; yet, 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 is on the better side of the spectrum.
We noticed something in our tests, and it is a bit worrying. The battery cycle, as Acer says, is 7 hours. Alas, in our first opening, it was merely 6 hours and 15 minutes, and the second time we tested, it took even less to drain the battery fully. It is undoubtedly better than most of the laptops on our list, such as Dell Inspiron or Asus Gaming laptop.
Physical Features and Others
As for the design, I just did not like the position of its touchpad. Apart from that, it is very lightweight and widescreen. 15.6 inches display size means that the only display that is larger than this is the HP Laptop.
Acer Aspire deserves its place thanks to its good RAM and highly functioning processor. The longevity of its batters is a bit questionable though
- Very good processor
- Great price-performance ratio
- Possible battery problems
8. Dell Inspiron 2020 i5 1035G4
Dell’s Inspiron competes with Acer Aspire and Lenovo IdeaPad, and it is the best out of the three. If you are planning to buy a laptop that processing daily tasks is a pleasure rather than a struggle, Dell Inspiron 2020 is the go-to laptop.
Let’s see why together. The 2020 model of Dell Inspiron has a lot of extras with its parts. For example, Dell has a much better RAM capacity with its 16 GB SD RAM. As a comparison, it is four times better than Lenovo and two times better than Acer Aspire. Higher RAM is a real game-changer for casual laptops. It works fast and steady.
Another thing that Dell beats the others is its storage capacity. Even though it is still low compared to modern-day regular laptops, it has 256 GB SSD, which gives more space and comfort for you. Its opponents in this segment, Acer and Lenovo, both have 128 GB SSDs. However, we recommend you buy an external HDD for better performance.
If there is one thing that I did not like about the Dell Inspiron, it is its processor. It has a 10th generation Intel Core i5 1035G4 processor. It is unfortunately not enough to use this computer for a long time. After a couple of years, you will probably want to upgrade or change your computer completely. Lenovo’s processor is much better.
Another thing I would like to point out is its battery life. We saw that this laptop’s battery is the worst performer. It took about four and a half hours to drain the battery to zero. It is horrendous. The fact that the battery drains easily also ensures that it charges very quickly. So, you might want to take your charging cord with you all the time.
Its screen size is the smallest of all the others on our list except for the Lenovo C330. At 14-inch, you may not see every detail if you are watching something there. In addition to that, it is quite lightweight, about 4.4 pounds.
If you focus on the RAM and storage along with the graphics, Dell is a great choice. However, if your expectations are long durability and cable-free experience, Dell Inspiron may not be the one.
- The best RAM on our list
- Good storage capacity
- Low battery life
A Quick Guide to Buying a New Laptop!
There are a few things to consider when buying a laptop. As we do not buy a computer every week, we have to consider our priorities and aims, then, choose carefully!
So, the purpose of the system is essential. Are you a casual web-surfer? Do you want to use it professionally? Is battery life essential for you? These are the questions you need to ask yourself. If you are going to use your computer only for checking the news, access your social media, your expectations from a laptop would be a lot different than a graphic designer.
Similarly, you need to go for a better graphic card if you plan to use it for gaming. Higher RAM would be useful if you usually have a lot of windows open at the same time.
Taking your computer to your workplace is a process that should not involve lots of cables. So, check the expected battery life unless you want to experience some unfortunate drained battery incidents. For most users, at least 4 to 5 hours of battery life is enough, but again think of your purpose first.
Ideally, you should take a look at laptops with better hardware. Of course, this bumps the price up. However, a better graphic card, RAM, higher HDD storage would give you a great advantage. Mostly, we do not bother ourselves with upgrading the laptop pieces individually. We just use it until we cannot then look for a new one. A better system will extend the life of a computer.
Lastly, the size. The size is essential because it is not something you can upgrade later. You just need to find one that fits the best for you. If you need it to be portable, check a smaller size. Larger screens will have their advantages, such as better screen quality.
