Opened in 1965 as the Alberta Vocational Centre (AVC) in Fort McMurray; the official opening ceremonies were held on January 26, 1966.Opened under the name "Keyano" in 1975; Keyano is a Cree word that roughly translated means "sharing"; the original slogan for the College was adapted from that to be "Yours, Mine and Ours". In 1978 Keyano College went public and became a community college, when the province appointed a Board of Governors to serve as the decision-making body for the institution.

The Fort McMurray Catholic Board of Education serves over 4,200 students in eight schools. Schools offer a wide range of programming geared towards meeting the academic, cultural and spiritual needs of our community. Instruction is primarily in English, with some schools offering French Immersion programming. A wide range of sports, social, cultural, fine arts, spiritual and leadership programs are available. Part of the Public Education System of Alberta, schools offer a faith-based learning environment to students of any background and a level of instruction geared toward the highest academic standards.
