We have introduced a carsharing service into Calgary, to make it easier to live without owning a car. Car sharing is community based, so participants can book a nearby vehicle on the web or with a phone call, then walk to pick it up. Fuel, insurance and maintenance are included in the per-hour and per-km fees. Our studies show that using car sharing can be significantly cheaper than owning a car if you drive less than 15,000 km per year. Owning a car is expensive regardless of how much you drive, so the savings become even greater if you can find ways of driving less. This is what makes car sharing an important part of our strategy to reduce traffic.
